Television
Lighting
Without Light, It's
Radio.
How hard can it be?
Throw a couple of redheads up, and she'll be sweet? Not with me
its not. Broadcast lighting is a real art. Unlike our eyes, the
camera does not adjust to the changes in light level. We must
manipulate light to suit the camera, both technically and
artistically, and this means using diffusion, colour correction,
dimmers, flags and cutters. With lighting, I don't believe that
close enough is good enough. I promote the ART of television
lighting. |

Monday Night Live - Chief
Entertainment for Bigpond Music
Chief
Entertainment
approached me earlier this year asking me to design a new music
show to be shot in Sydney and broadcast live through the Telstra
Bigpond Music Network . 'Monday Night Live' has now been running for
several weeks with talent including David Campbell, Ben Lee, Scribe,
Amy Pearson, Shannon Noll, Small Mercies, Paul Kelly, Angus & Julia
Stone and The Waifs.
The lighting rig is simple yet effective - and incorporates 16
pieces of Colour Web 250, an array of Profiles, Pars and Fresnels controlled by a Hog 1000.
Dimitri Levie acts as the Lighting Director with James Frost his
able assistant .

MTV Australia 'The Lair'
In 2006 I was
approached by MTV asking me to look at lighting a new live music
show to be shot in Sydney. The Lair was conceived and went to air on
Australia Day 2007. It is now on air every Thursday live from
Sydney's Metro on George Street with up to four acts performing up
to three songs each within the hour. The concept of the show sees it
more as a film of a party as apposed to a TV show - and consequently
it is lit the same.
The lighting rig includes 84 channels of
dimming, Source 4 pars and profiles, an array of 1k Fresnels, LED
Floods and Mac
250 Wash fixtures controlled by a Hog 1000 driven by Dimitri Levie.
Lighting Assistants James Frost and Jo Espey are kept busy with
roving hosting positions and repo-ing between the acts which can be
very interesting in a live to air environment!
The Lair's webpage
can be visited at www.myspace.com/mtvthelair.

Ho Chi Minh City Television
(HTV) Lighting Director Course
In
February I was approached by La Trobe University in Melbourne asking
me to
design and deliver a second five day course teaching the skills of today's
Broadcast Lighting Director to the lighting staff at Ho Chi Minh
City Television (HTV) in Vietnam. This course would be an 'advanced'
Lighting Director course, following the 'basic' Lighting Director
course I delivered in September 2006. Under the guidance of the
University's Dr Peter White, I developed a syllabus consisting of
seven learning outcomes which would give students a thorough
understanding of how TV is lit in the western world.
In April I delivered the course to twenty-five members of
HTV's lighting team at their new studio complex in Ho Chi Minh City.
During the week I also lit several of HTV's shows including the
Grand Final of 'Nokia Superband' (aka Vietnam Idol) and other teen
based talk shows.
